We promote excellence in teaching with a focus on active learning and writing as a means of critical inquiry. Our mission is to create and sustain campus-wide engagement with writing, communication, and scholarly inquiry. Although many Duke students associate the Thompson Writing Program with its first-year writing course, the program also provides resources and instruction for our graduate students. Among our courses, we offer a graduate-level, faculty-directed writing course in a field of special interest on an approved topic. And our TWP Writing Studio provides support to graduate student writers admitted through The Graduate School.

The Thompson Writing Program provides undergraduates with instruction and resources that enable them to be better communicators. We offer courses that prepare them for university-level writing, courses that help hone their writing skills, and writing consultants to discuss their unique writing concerns. We also publish an annual journal that showcases exemplary pieces of student writing from our courses.
